Nested
in the Himalayas, Darjeeling is situated at an altitude of 7,000 Ft.
& approximate area of 12,000 Square Miles. Universally described
as the Queen of hills. The name Darjeeling came from the Tibetan
words, “Dorje” meaning thunder-bolt (originally the scepter
of Indra & “ling” a place or land. Hence, ‘the land of the
'Thunderbolt’ . Darjeeling was gifted to British India at 1835. To most international visitors, the name “Darjeeling” brings to mind, the best quality tea in the world. Bearing testimony to this, are over 70 tea gardens close to the town. The Darjeeling toy train (declared a world heritage site by UNESCO in 1999) chugs, along from New Jalpaiguri & reaches Darjeeling after traveling through jungles, rice paddies, tea gardens and pine forests, making this a journey to remember . |

Tiger Hill It
is famous for affording a fabulous view of Mount Kanchendzonga &
certain other eastern Himalayas peaks at sunrise . 3)
Batasia Loop The
Batasia loop situated almost 5 Km away from the town is a gigantic
railway loop where the toy train makes a 360 degree turn. It offers a
panoramic view of the Kanchendzonga Range. 4)
Himalayan Mountaineering Institute Set up on the top of Birch Hill (locally known as Jawahar Parbat) to encourage the sport of mountaineering . it is famous all over the world. The foundation stone of the Institute was laid by Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India on the 4th Nov. 1954, the Legendary Tenzing Norgay Sherpa was its first Director of Field Training its well laid out Museum on mountain lore. 5) Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park. It is a high altitude wildlife park & a new home for the Siberian Tiger, Himalayan black bear, deer and panda. 6)

Ghoom Monastery A typical Tibetan monastery which enshrines an image of the maitreyee buddha or the coming buddha. 9)
Japanese Temple The
temple is based on a traditional Japanese architecture & offers
visitors a peaceful retreat . It was established by Nipponzan
Myohoji, a Japanese Buddhist Order.

Dhirdam Temple The temple was designed by the Gorkha architect Beg Raj Sakya to replicate the Pashupatinath temple in Kathmandu. 11)
Ava Art Gallery Ava Art Gallery was established in 1965 by the late Bhopal Rao Sett & Ava Devi. It is the only Art Gallery of its kind in the Hills. A Collection of Art work in water, oil & thread paintings are displayed in the Gallery. 12)
Rock Garden & Ganga Maya Park 10Km
from town, Rock Garden & Ganga Maya Park has now developed into a
very attractive picnic spot with natural water falls. The park offers
boating facilities & is endowed with great scenic beauty .

Tibetan Refugee Self Help Centre Tibetan
Refugee self help center is located at hillside Lebong. Established to
house Tibetan refugee the center is today a major center for the
production of Tibetan carpets, woodwork & leather goods.
Established in 1959, it has a home for the aged, an orphanage, school,
hospital, a monastery & craft workshops producing carpets of
ladakhi wool, wood carving, wood product & leather products. It
also has a showroom selling Tibetan coins, banknotes & Jewellery .

Chowrasta & Mall Chowrasta
a Wide Promenade atop a ridge lined with shops &
restaurants is
taken to be the heart of the town. Here people gather to chat, spend
time basking in the sun or just to snatch a moment of peace. 15)
